CAGP releases new report dispelling RAN’s campaign against kids, consumers and the developing world

WASHINGTON, DC – The Consumers Alliance for Global Prosperity (CAGP) fired back today with a rebuttal to the latest move by the Rainforest Action Network (RAN) to scare parents from buying their children books during this holiday season by claiming the books they buy will cause massive destruction of the rainforest and the killing of those cute little fury fellows. This is fear mongering and politics at its lowest, and a gross exaggeration of the facts. In a new report released today, Misguided Reading: How RAN’s Book Guide Stacks Down on American Consumers and the Developing World, CAGP attempts to set the record straight.

“Our latest examination of RAN’s campaign to limit consumer choice, scare parents and spread misinformation about companies from Asia finds it repeating the same old, tired and debunked accusations of the past. Ironically, CAGP research has shown that increasingly this campaign may be at the behest of uncompetitive U.S. paper companies who cannot compete in the open market versus their Asian counterparts,” said Andrew Langer, spokesman for CAGP.

Under the guise of sustainability, RAN ranked two weeks ago U.S. publishers’ sourcing policies in an effort to scare off parents away from purchasing their children’s favorite books. Not only is this fear mongering, but also “Greenmail” against publishers and their sourcing strategies.

Langer continued, “Time and time again, RAN has ignored reality and the facts. RAN claims the objective of its report is to influence the purchasing decisions of parents in the U.S. The result, though, has a far more negative impact on children in the developing world than the supposed environmental and social consequences they claim exist, which have been debunked. And RAN’s campaign will have the unintended consequence of keeping kids from reading — hardly a good social cause in the minds of most Americans. Shamefully, the objective of RAN’s latest work is to increase prices, and this will tear books out of the hands of America’s children.”
